All About Bruxism
What is Bruxism?
Bruxism is a condition involving extreme teeth grinding or clenching. If you have bruxism, you may find yourself clenching or grinding your teeth throughout the day or even at night, which is identified as sleep bruxism. Some patients may be unaware that it is happening since it often becomes second nature.
Mild bruxism may not require treatment, but should be dealt with if you are experiencing jaw disorders, headaches, damaged teeth or other symptoms. Additionally, sleep bruxism is sometimes asymptomatic so it’s important that you know the signs and symptoms and when to seek professional care from our Granada Hills dentist, Dr. Gohar Hovsepyan.
Symptoms of bruxism include:
- Severe teeth grinding
- Tired or tight jaw muscles
- Indentations of the tongue
- Damaged mouth tissues (specifically inside of the cheeks)
- Face pain or soreness
- Worn tooth enamel
- Increased tooth sensitivity
What causes bruxism?
Dentists are unsure of what can cause bruxism but stress and anxiety is often a common factor between patients that have this diagnosis. Additionally, other physical or psychological changes may be a cause of bruxism development in a patient.
You should see our dentist if you find that you have one or more of the above reference symptoms and are finding that this is impacting your day-to-day life. We are committed to providing you with quality, comprehensive dental care that will help promote your oral and overall health. Call us today!
